Korey Wells meant to illustrate children's books; now she paints with buttercream at Whiskful Thinking Cakes on South Fort Apache Road. Her team took second on the TV baking contest The Big Bake.

Korey Wells meant to illustrate children's books. She holds a degree in illustration and fine arts, according to a cast profile for The Big Bake, but a short stretch in the art world gave way to a much longer one in hospitality management, including on the Strip. Then she picked up a piping bag instead of a brush. "The buttercream is just like paint," she told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2022.

From mom-group cakes to Fort Apache

It began with birthday cakes for her daughters and for mom groups. The dates, as reported:

  • By 2021. The cottage business had outgrown her home, and a client offered to invest in a regular bakery.
  • August 2021. What Now Las Vegas reported that the shop was taking over 5035 S. Fort Apache Road, a former ice cream parlor.
  • January 2022. Construction began.
  • Mother's Day 2022. The doors opened.
  • September 19, 2022. Her team's Halloween episode of the TV baking competition The Big Bake aired, and the team took second. Their clown's arm lifted on a robotic motor, with PVC pipe, foil and Rice Krispies under the fondant.

What is in the case

Wells told the Review-Journal she loathes sheet cakes: "The fun thing about cakes is dimensionality, things that go high and around and depth." Wedding cakes were "a significant slice" of the business in 2022, including one with the couple's goldendoodles on top, eating the frosting.

The cupcake case is anchored by birthday confetti, coconut caramel, cookies and cream and strawberry shortcake, with seasonal flavors rotating through. The website also sells cone cakes: a small cake on a cone, chocolate or confetti, with a color theme and 12 candle styles to choose from.

Ordering and delivery

The shop says it is open seven days a week and offers in-store pickup. Custom cake requests start on the website. Delivery covers the Strip, Las Vegas and Henderson; Strip drop-offs meet at the valet area unless arranged otherwise, and the driver waits ten minutes at most.

On the record

The Review-Journal called Wells the shop's "face and co-owner." The shop's About page lists Cece as investor and Maryanne as head baker and kitchen manager. KSNV's News 3 talked with Wells, "owner of Whiskful Thinking Cakes," for Mother's Day 2025.
