Wassa Coulibaly's boutique inside the Baobab Stage at Town Square, selling her handmade Wassa Wear dresses, kimonos, mud cloth coats and accessories.
Wassa Boutique is inside the Baobab Stage at Town Square, beside a small café and a theater that hosts burlesque-variety nights, live music, comedy, poetry readings and fashion shows. All three belong to Wassa Coulibaly, who named the place for the baobab, the gathering tree of West Africa, and treats it as one three-part stop for shopping, a drink and a show. The clothes on the racks are her own designs, sold under the Wassa Wear label and made in the USA.
From Zumanity to her own stage
Coulibaly grew up in Dakar, Senegal, and came to the United States as a teenager. She joined Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity when it opened in 2003 and stayed until October 2013, by which point she had already opened the Baobab Stage, in November 2012. Her collections have been shown at Fashion Week Las Vegas, including a couture collection in February 2015, and in a showroom at the MAGIC trade show.
On the racks
Coulibaly has described her clothes as versatile, body-hugging styles that bring the tribal looks of her part of West Africa together with American dress. The shop calls its work handmade and custom styling for women, men, children and performers. Recent pieces include:
- Hoody dresses, poncho dresses and winged dresses
- Kimonos, dusters, and mud cloth coats and cloaks
- Jumpsuits, jackets, and matching sets for men and women
- Handbags, earrings, necklaces and shoes
Fabrics run from mud cloth, cotton and linen to denim and recycled vinyl. The online shop also groups pieces into plus-size, tall, wedding and mother-and-daughter lines.
In 2020, with the theater dark, she designed hooded dresses with a face cover that snaps into place, along with masks on beaded chains, and sold them online. By 2022 she had moved into shoes and handbags, made with artists and people close to her back home in Senegal.
