At Akin Cooperative, a glass of natural wine can accompany a browse through locally made ceramics and jewelry. Jen Taler’s Arts District shop brings the small-business selection of a market into a permanent storefront on South Commerce Street.

A market idea with a home

Taler also founded Market in the Alley. Nevada Public Radio’s Desert Companion described Akin as an outgrowth of that pop-up bazaar, giving shoppers another place to find work by independent makers. In her Nevada Week interview, Taler discussed opening the store and making room for wine and beer alongside the retail collection.

The current brand directory is broad: ceramic artists, jewelry makers, clothing designers, candle businesses and stationery creators all appear. The shop organizes merchandise by use as well as by maker, so a visitor can browse home decor, body care, art or accessories and then learn who produced an item.
