The founder

Donovan Thiessen, CPA, grew up in Iowa along the Mississippi River and has called Nevada home for about two decades. He spent 11 years inside a fast-growing Las Vegas tax and accounting firm before, with his wife’s encouragement, going out on his own and founding The Accountant in 2018. He has written tax columns for Vegas Legal Magazine on depreciation, the 2018 federal tax changes and pandemic-era relief, and he is booked as the CPA on an October 2026 business-exit planning panel hosted by ACT Capital Advisors.

What the firm handles

• Monthly accounting: near-real-time reports each month in QuickBooks Online, Desktop or Enterprise, beginning with a custom onboarding
• Tax returns: federal and state returns for businesses, trusts and individuals
• Tax planning: retirement plans, when and how to buy or finance equipment, credits and elections
• Startup help: setting up QuickBooks, time tracking and a payroll account
• One-off projects: for example, working out the gain on the sale of a rental property
• Financial statements and help working through IRS audits

Monthly clients get routine consulting as part of the arrangement, but the firm also takes single, transactional jobs. It lists its core values on its site, among them trustworthiness, accuracy, empathy and balance, and says it wants to work with people who share them. Clients send documents through a secure sharing portal, and the website keeps tax due dates, record-retention guidance, IRS forms and financial calculators open to anyone.
