Kessler & Sons Music

Music Store, Las Vegas

Listed Researched from public sources.

Family woodwind and brass shop founded as a repair bench in 1989: sales, setup, school rentals, lessons and Selmer Paris ProShop repairs at three Vegas stores.

It started at the repair bench

Kessler & Sons Music opened in 1989 as an instrument repair shop, and repair is still the center of this family business. Founder Chuck Kessler leads the shop and trains every technician himself instead of hiring them ready-made; the store also notes that he is a certified Straubinger technician. All work is done at the main store on East Charleston near Mojave, but you can drop an instrument at any of the three locations, which trade repairs daily.

Selmer Paris has named Kessler an official ProShop, a designation the store says is based on repair skill rather than sales and is held by about a dozen U.S. shops, none of the others in Nevada. Saxophone and clarinet work draws enough mail-in business that the shop runs two separate sites for it, SaxophoneRepairs.com and ClarinetRepairs.com.

On the shelves

  • Flutes and piccolos, clarinets including A and bass clarinets, oboes, English horns, bassoons, and saxophones from soprano to bari
  • Trumpets, French horns, trombones, euphoniums and flugelhorns
  • Violins, violas and cellos through its sister site, KesslerStrings.com
  • Kessler Custom, the store’s own line of bass clarinets and euphoniums
  • Mouthpieces, reeds, necks, cases and care supplies

Every instrument gets a setup in the repair shop before it leaves, and each sale includes a trial period and a one-year shop warranty. School band and orchestra rentals are offered to Nevada residents.

Which store to visit

The East store has the largest selection, so it is the one to visit if you are coming from out of state to try instruments, and it is where the Kessler family is most often found. The West store moved from Sahara and Rainbow to Cheyenne and Tenaya in November 2014 and has the roomiest lesson studios. The Green Valley store is on Eastern Avenue, two stoplights south of the 215. Private lessons with working players are booked week to week, and most need no prepayment or minimum commitment.

Hours: East and Green Valley, Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. West, Monday to Thursday 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. All closed Sunday.
