Anthony Urango runs Animal House Pottery in North Las Vegas, with wheel and handbuilding classes, open-studio memberships, raku and kiln firing. Members' work hung in City Hall this summer.
Anthony Urango needed an elective in school, picked ceramics and was hooked from the first class, the studio's About page says. He became his teacher's aide for four years after high school, mixing clay and loading kilns, earned a Bachelor of Arts at UNLV, then spent 2013 to 2016 on Maui as a production potter specializing in raku. Back in Las Vegas he opened Animal House Pottery, a name his mentor Frank Polito coined: "attack the clay like an animal."
What the city said
This summer the City of Las Vegas showed an exhibit called "It's O'Clay!" in the Grand Gallery at City Hall, with work by Urango and 13 studio members, through July 30. The city's gallery newsletter describes him as a ceramic artist with nearly 26 years of experience whose work is "rooted in imagination and guided by an ongoing exploration of texture, closed forms and negative space." The artists explained the title: it is what they say "while learning to throw on the wheel or hand build."

The Review-Journal's August 2024 guide to Valley pottery studios listed classes, one-on-one sessions and kiln firing for people who sculpt at home, plus workshops with the Japanese ceramic artist Shingo Takeuchi. The studio lists hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 to 6 on weekends. On its calendar for October 28, 2026: a three-hour figure sculpture class with a live model, limited to 20 people.
